Building RTOs for the future: Visions and Options

This research activity will listen to the voices and ‘feel the pulse’ of a cross-section of those most closely involved in the sector. This consultation will inform and refine the consortium’s proposed research plan, and actively engage the VET sector in the research program as a whole.

Meet the team

Leader:
Roger Harris

Professor Roger Harris is the Director of the Centre for Research in Education, Equity and Work (CREEW), and Professor in Adult and Vocational Education at the University of South Australia. He is also one of the three program directors of the Research Consortium.

His professional activities include research and consultancy, teaching and supervision, journal editing and review, and national executive responsibilities. His career interest in research has gradually evolved after fulfilling roles in teaching, course coordination, acting headship of the former School of Human Resource Studies and several international consultancies for the university. A particular concern is the dissemination of research.

Research interests include: Adult and vocational education generally, Australian training reform, Workplace learning, Competency-based approaches, competency standards, VET professional development and Needs analyses and evaluations. Berwyn Clayton

Ms Berwyn Clayton is Director of the Centre Undertaking Research in Vocational Education (CURVE) at the Canberra Institute of Technology. She is also one of the three program directors of the Research Consortium. She is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators (ACE) and Immediate Past President of the Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association (AVETRA).

Berwyn’s research interests are competency-based training and assessment, skills recognition, VET pedagogy and the changing roles and ongoing development of VET practitioners. Her recent research project publications and conference papers can be accessed at: http://www.cit.act.edu.au/curve/.

Geof Hawke

Geof Hawke is a Senior Research Fellow in Vocational Education and Training at the Australian Centre for Organisational, Vocational and Adult Learning (OVAL) at the University of Technology Sydney. He is also a Principal Researcher for the Research Consortium.
His experience of vocational education ranges across work as vocational counsellor, researcher, manager and policy adviser. As head of the Assessment Research and Development Unit of the NSW TAFE Commission was responsible for establishing assessment policy and practice in NSW TAFE colleges. He has also been a key liaison point with industry and founding Chief Executive of the National Community Services and Health Industry Training Advisory Board.
At OVAL he has managed over 40 research projects and acted as Centre Director. Research interests include: the effective linkage between policy and practice; improving assessment practice; how work is changing and the implications of this for learning; the nature of learning in the workplace and itsrole within formal education and training systems; and the nature and role of institutions within education and training. Research questions

  • What issues, futures, constraints and opportunities will influence individual and organisational capability in RTOs?

Rationale

This activity will ensure that the VET system is presented with a clear picture of the nature of the consortium and its program of research. The activity will also provide consortium researchers with an awareness of the innovative practices and activities already in existence around the nation and of who the key informants are around the nation within RTOs and VET systems. It will feed into all of the other activities and help to inform their foci, direction and methodologies, thereby allowing for flexibility and responsiveness.

Methodology

Over the first three months of the program, individual consultations with key stakeholders and structured forums with a wide range of VET personnel in each each state and territory, with ACPET and the AEU
